Steam Processing

Steam processors, or hair steamers, are not new to the salon industry but you definitely don't see them in every salon. At macquarie hair we have been using steam processors for many years, usually for hair conditioning and remediation treatments. However, we have found that their use is equally valid in hair perming (traditional) and colour work.

If you have been wondering what some of the equipment in our salon is used for, then, by reading this, you have just discovered our steam processor...

A steam processor (as the name suggests) works by using steam vapour and heat. This gently opens up the hair cuticle to allow the chosen treatment to penetrate deeply and quickly whilst maintaining the integrity of the hair.

Steam processors can be used with most types of hair colour services. When compared to conventional dry-heat accelerators, steamers can be used to shorten processing times because the colour does not take as long to penetrate into the cuticle. They are extra handy for stubborn colours like red, which have a hard time getting into the hair due to their larger colour molecule size.

When hair steamers are used in conditioning and other hair treatments, the steam will drive the product deep into the hair, leaving it smooth and shiny. A steamer is also a great treatment for dandruff and itchy scalp. The steam infuses moisture into the scalp and the heat will work to kill any fungus or bacteria that is causing the itching.

When used in the perming process, steam and negative ions are used to neutralise the perming odours and to maximise the moisture in the hair. In this manner a traditional perm results in a much softer and manageable result.
